There is a God

How do I know such a thing? Besides the Southern Baptist long embedded in my brain, I went to Potbelly with my officemate and these were waiting for me!

Now Kate doesn't have to ship them to me anymore. Though you won't ever see me turn them away should they arrive at my doorstep :)

The Building of a Deck: Part 3

'After'

It was definitely worth the wait! Now if we can only decide on a new liner for the pool. But we have until next spring to do that :)

So much to post. So little time.

This will have to tide you over until I am all caught up from being out of the office for a week without access to a computer.

Yes. That is 12:13 AM! I can't even tell you the last time I saw those numbers on the face of a clock until Sunday night when we stopped in Charlotte for some much needed sleep. How I wish I was there right now snuggled up with Sydney and Mr. Giraffe.

Coming up later this week, The Building of a Deck: After and Doug's Retirement: The Ceremony. And of course pictures from Grandma's!

Doug's Retirement: USS Wasp Tour

The past few days, weeks, even months, have been a bit hectic with Doug's pending retirement, resume writing, and job interviews. Fortunately, it looks like things will be slowing down since hubby accepted a job offer last week. YAY! He also had his retirement ceremony on Friday aboard the USS Wisconsin down in Norfolk, VA. Here are a few pictures from the weekend events.

Friday morning we all met up and headed to NOB (Naval Station Norfolk) for a tour of the USS Wasp (LHD 1).

Rope envy, Kenny?

Wondertwin powers activate! Wondertwin cousins, actually.

Daddy, did you know there's a doggy on my back?

Sara's new BFF (she escorted her to the ladies room and later took us on a mini-tour devoid of ramps that were steeper than Mount Everest).

Hello, Mr. Roosevelt!

Hello, sunshine!

Notice there are NO RAILS on deck!

And it was WINDY! Just look at my hair. And how cute is Sara saluting :)

Say cheese Uncle Mick.

Headed back inside.

Doug pointing out a frigate to his Uncle Marty.

See.

Tip of the day: If there's a possibility you will have to climb up and down these steps while holding a 16 month old, do NOT make the same mistake I did and wear your Havianas! Wear something that does not require a conscious effort to clinch your toes together in order to keep your shoes on and you from falling down said steps.

Goodies!

This past weekend was a momentous occasion, Amanda's bachelorette party in New Orleans. Sadly, I wasn't able to make the trip because of a) the cost of a plane ticket, b) the logistics of planning two trips to MS (well, MS and LA) within 2 weeks of each other just wasn't happening, and c) I couldn't bring myself to be away from Sydney for the weekend, or even one night as I considered just an overnight trip. Anyway. Carol, a fellow bridesmaid, sent me a goodie bag and it arrived just in time to kick off the weekend so I could celebrate in spirit. Here's what I got:

A rockin' cd that Sydney and I loved dancing to. Christina Aguilera's Dirrty, Willa Ford's I Wanna Be Bad, and the awesome Cyndi Lauper's Girls Just Want to Have Fun! I mean, who doesn't love some bad girl music?

A super cute koozy (I never know how to spell that word) that held my Barq's. It's got bite!

And the best hot pink cookie I've ever eaten. Of course, I haven't had too many of them before this little gem arrived. But it was delish! Don't believe me? Ask Sydney what she thought!

The Building of a Deck: Part 2

'During'

Oooh. Rails!

And real patio furniture! Gotta love those sales at Sears :)

No, you're eyes do NOT deceive you. Those are real live tomato plants on my deck (and basil, cilantro, and squash too). And I planted them. Pinky swear! I stuck my hands in real live dirt and fertilizer and planted them. OK, so they were gloved hands, but still. And they didn't have any buds when I brought them home.

Yay for little bitty buds that might actually grow into something edible should my luck hold out and I don't send them to an early compost pile! Oh wait, I don't compost. I don't even know what compost is, except that it's something to do with gardening and trash I think. Hmmm, let me google. In the meantime, enjoy the buds :)

Now, back to my regularly scheduled program of Sno-Caps and water :)

You know you're a mom when...

If you are unsure whether or not you are a mom, and trust me, there will be days you wonder whether or not it was truly possible that you could overcome your fear of pain and needles to push out 8 pounds of human flesh - sorry for that mental image, really I am, then just read below.

1. You have ever wiped your child's nose with your bare hand because wrangling a baby wipe or tissue from your purse would have taken too long allowing bodily fluid from your child's nose to reach your child's mouth and the thought of that is much more disgusting to you than having someone else's snot on your bare hand or heaven forbid your shirt, nevermind that it's probably crusted with banana or mushed crackers from sticky baby fingers.

2. You realize after you have already left the house that your shirt and pants are covered in bananas and/or mushed crackers from sticky baby fingers and you just keep driving, because really, it's much less work to not care about that than it would be to take your child out of the car seat, take 10 minutes for her to walk from the car to the house because she doesn't want to be carried anymore, and change clothes only to have sticky baby fingers dirty up the new clothes because she insists on giving your legs a hug (which, BTW are the sweetest thing EVER!) while you are trying to get dressed. And let's not even talk about the fight to get her back into her car seat after she was recently set free.

3. You have ever cleaned out your purse and found 2 plastic Easter eggs, 1 bright orange kitty cat link, and a baby brush resting comfortably under your wallet, glasses case, and camera. Let's Make a Deal, here I come!

4. You have ever left a restaurant and when the hostess said "Have a nice night", you are so frazzled by the evening's events that you are unable to form any coherent words and end up sounding like you stuffed a bunch of cottonballs in your mouth. Mental note: Wait a few months before going back to Famous Daves.

5. You no longer freak out when you are changing a diaper and get poo on your hands because your child refuses to lay still for the duration of said diaper change. That's what extra wipes and hand sanitizer is for.

6. You happily take a bite of pretzel rod that your child offers you, nevermind that she's just spent the last 5 minutes with it in her mouth, because in the rush to get out of the house you missed eating your own breakfast and a slobbery pretzel is much more enticing than passing out somewhere in the mall.

7. Sleeping late on the weekend is no longer 12:30pm, but 7:30am, and you are perfectly ok with that.

If you are guilty of any of the above, then the answer is a resounding YES, you are definitely a mom. A proud, busy, wornout, fearless, could care less what other people in line at Target or the grocery store think of you mom!
